Cold Crematorium – Carolin Emcke und Lena Gorelik on the work of József Debreczeni, accompanied by Anja Lechner on violoncello
As the last witnesses and survivors reach the ends of their lives, we stand at a turning point in our memory of the Holocaust. It is therefore all the more important that voices such as József Debreczeni’s are heard. The renowned Hungarian journalist and poet was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 and held captive for months in various concentration camps. Shortly after being released, he wrote his indictment Cold Crematorium. But after its publication in 1950, the book was soon forgotten. Now, after 70 years, the text has been rediscovered and translated into 15 languages. “An immensely powerful and deeply humane eyewitness account of the horror of the camps” (Karl Ove Knausgård). Debreczeni portrays the people he encountered in the camps with precision, irony and caustic humor. Carolin Emcke and Lena Gorelik will discuss the importance of this book. Anja Lechner will accompany them on violoncello with pieces from her new album “Bach – Abel – Hume”.
