“Don’t think twice, it’s all right.” Wolfgang Niedecken on the literature that influenced his life and work
The legendary “Zeitreise” [“Time Travel”] album by Wolfgang Niedecken’s band, BAP, was released in April 2024. It was put together from live footage of four memorable concerts in Cologne’s Sartory Sälen venue. The album concentrates on early works and looks back at the band’s musical beginnings. But what is the literary origin of Wolfgang Niedecken’s music, lyrics and perspectives? We all know about his deep appreciation of Bob Dylan (now a Nobel laureate) and his great love for the Kölsch dialect spoken in Cologne – but which writers, which books influenced the songs that are so unique and have moved so many people worldwide? Sabine Heinrich talks to Wolfgang Niedecken about the literature of his life, his own autobiographically-motivated books (“Für ne Moment” [“For a Moment”], “Zugabe” [“Encore”]), the lyrics that have inspired him, and writing and storytelling in general. A journey through the life and times of a great reader and writer.
