Female friendships on the page – with Annette Frier and Maren Kroymann
Good female friendships are something to be envied, as German songwriter Funny van Dannen sings in “Freundinnen müsste man sein!” Literature is also full of great female friendships – wild, intelligent, sweet-tempered and quick-witted girlfriends who are brought together by life’s tragic and comedic twists and turns. Their male counterparts may be a thousand times more famous, but we are going to change that this evening! Forget about Tom and Huckleberry or Sherlock and Watson: Annette Frier and Maren Kroymann are rolling out the red carpet for the most wonderful female friendships in world literature. Stefanie Sargnagel and Christiane Rösinger will sink into American armchairs, while Zadie Smith details the vagaries of girls’ ballet lessons. “I cannot imagine how I should live without you,” wrote Hannah Arendt to her friend Hilde Fränkel, demonstrating that great friendships are also always great love stories.
