From the mountains of Transylvania to the Swiss Alps: What do “Dracula” and “Heidi” have in common? Mark Benecke, Peter Otto Büttner and Mavie Hörbiger on two icons of world literature
with Mavie Hörbiger Peter Otto Büttner Tobias Rüther Mark Benecke
They are both legendary: Heidi, the young orphan in the Swiss Alps, and Dracula, the bloodsucking Romanian Count. And they both became pop culture icons. What are the parallels between Spyri’s work and the great novel penned by Bram Stoker (1847–1912)? Do Miss Rottenmeier, Clara, Heidi’s grandfather and Dracula have more in common than we thought?
Peter Otto Büttner is a “Heidi” expert and working to have the story by Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) finally taken seriously and its cultural value recognized. He is president of the Heidi Heritage Project and director of the Heidi archives.
Mark Benecke is a forensic biologist and has a great passion for everything mysterious, especially the bloodsucking creatures of the night, the vampires. He is the Chair of the Transylvanian Society of Dracula. Both men are rediscovering global literature. Mavie Hörbiger will read from “Dracula” and “Heidi”. Host: Tobias Rüther
