“I crack jokes in court to make you laugh”.* Katja Kolm and Michael Maertens read Navalny’s literary legacy
This is what Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most feared critic, wrote to his wife, Yulia Navalnaya. Katja Kolm began collecting the activist’s prison writings in 2021, in order to make them available to the German public. The reading Hallo, hier spricht Nawalny [“Hello, This Is Navalny”] debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 2024 – shortly after Alexei Navalny’s death. The letters reveal him to be a rational analyst, passionate prophet, rigorous and wry prosecutor and loving husband. He dissects the Russian government, describes conditions in prison, delves into Russian history and shares personal experiences. Newspaper Die Zeit declared effusively: “This reading, subtitled ‘Letters from a Free Man’, should not remain a one-off. Katja Kolm and Michael Maertens should take it on tour”. We’re glad we could make that happen, so you can now experience the evening at lit.COLOGNE.
