“I freed myself from your father and thought everything would get better”. With Édouard Louis and Eva Mattes
Édouard Louis became a literary sensation in France with his autobiographical novels and essays (“The End of Eddy”, “Who Killed My Father”). He is especially celebrated for his unsparing self-descriptions and subtle observations of social settings.
Like “A Woman’s Battles and Transformations”, Monique s’evade [“Monique Breaks Free”] is dedicated to the story of his mother. He paints a tender portrait of a woman who has already freed herself before – from alcohol, violence, shame and silence. When her story threatens to repeat itself, Monique and her son plan her escape. But how does life go on if you’ve never learned how to be free? Louis tells the story of a mother fighting for autonomy and a son who joins forces with her – two people who become closer and begin to write a new story together.
