“I’m actually a humorist” – Dietmar Bär, Jeanette Hain, Thomas Mann and Volker Weidermann
Biting irony and humane sarcasm are what make Thomas Mann’s works so unique. It began with a quirky family from Lübeck, then moved on to dog owners and the Half Lung Club in a Swiss sanatorium, Ancient Egyptian women and demonic or amorous gossips, all the way through to a shrinking saint. In response to a PhD thesis that attributed nothing but deadly seriousness to all this, TM wrote in his diary: “I’m actually a humorist”.
And Dietmar Bär, Jeanette Hain and Volker Weidermann will prove it! 2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Thomas Mann’s birth. As many people think of him only as a distinguished and uptight member of the bourgeoisie, prone to showing off with never-ending sentences and tormenting his children with cold-blooded contempt, we feel it’s time to reveal the truth: Thomas Mann is ingeniously funny!
