Is being a writer a good idea? Tomas Espedal and Gerd Köster explore this question
How does one become a writer? Is it possible to make a career out of writing? Can one live off of it? And what kind of a life will it be? Tomas Espedal is, along with his friend Karl Ove Knausgård, one of Scandinavia’s most prominent authors. With his ten-volume autobiographical opus, he made a name for himself across Europe. Now in his new book, Lust, the Norwegian author looks back on a long, wild career and poses the big existential questions. It is both an autobiography and a bildungsroman, a book about reading and writing, about forgetting and remembering. And Espedal remembers all kinds of things: book tours and love affairs, excesses and dry spells, the book business and its abysses. Through the latter, he has been accompanied for years by his congenial translator Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel, who will play host this evening. German text: Gerd Köster
