Maybe life has something better in store – Anne Gesthuysen talks about feelings of guilt and motherly love
“It is one damn second which can turn a life upside down, which destroys dreams and plans, which makes the apparently self-explanatory seem absurd.” In the small community of Alpen in the Lower Rhine region of Germany, preparations for the annual asparagus festival are in full swing. While the tents are being set up and the choir led by Ottilie Oymann is fighting about “discrimination-sensitive language” in old song lyrics, pastor Anna von Betteray has very different worries. Raffaela, a girl who has been mentally disabled ever since an accident, is in a coma. She was found unconscious and nobody knows what happened. The rumor mill is churning wildly. Was the girl a victim of a violent crime? Could drug dealers or asparagus pickers be behind it? In Vielleicht hat das Leben Besseres vor [“Maybe Life Has Something Better In Store”], Anne Gesthuysen writes about feelings of guilt and a mother’s love, the power of a community and a life that wants to finally be lived.
