Mission to read – Aleida Assmann, Nora Bossong and Martin Stankowski on the power of reading and the benefits of great literature
“Literature can also be compared to a photo lab, where pictures of life can be processed in order to bring out their contours and nuances. [...] In reading we discover that our feelings are not simply our own, they are universal, and so even the most destitute person does not feel alone.” This passage is from a letter publicly released on July 17, 2024. The writer is no less than Pope Francis. He recommends reading authors such as Borges and T.S. Eliot. And reading as a universal means of training discernment skills, also and especially for priests in training. Tonight, the power of reading and books will be discussed by literary scholar Aleida Assmann, who most recently released the work “Public Spirit”, cowritten with her husband Jan Assmann (1938–2024), and Nora Bossong, a practicing Catholic and author, whose most recent novel “Reichskanzlerplatz” became a bestseller. Host: Martin Stankowski
