Perspectives – step into the world of the Medicis with Laurent Binet and Ulrich Noethen
Florence in the 1550s: Painter Jacopo da Pontormo is found dead. Stabbed with scissors, he lies at the foot of his unfinished fresco in the San Lorenzo chapel. He’d been working on it for 11 years. No one was allowed to look at it – except for Michelangelo, who considered Pontormo a great artist. Strangely, parts of the fresco have been painted over – but why and by whom? Uproar in the art world! But also in politics. This is a stroke of genius by Laurent Binet (“The Seventh Function of Language”). The mix of art and crime novel, written solely in in the form of correspondence, plays cleverly with different Perspectives. “Delightful, funny, brilliant and a fluid read, even if you’re unfamiliar with the history of the Medicis and Italian painting. And at the same time a gripping crime novel with lots of suspects and surprising twists” (Le Monde). German text: Ulrich Noethen; Host: Angela Spizig
