Play – Johann Scheerer on art, children, creativity and the usual chaos of modern life
Johann Scheerer is a man of many talents. As a music producer, he works with internationally successful artists. As an author he writes highly acclaimed novels (“Wir sind dann wohl die Angehörigen” [“I Guess We’re the Loved Ones, Then”], “Unheimlich nah” [“Unbelievably Close”]). In his new book, Play, he writes with great nonchalance and humor about the everyday absurdity of modern existence. His protagonist, David, is becoming increasingly tangled in a web of art, children and creativity. As a music manager, he looks after international star and drug addict, Ian White; at home he has to look after the children. When it becomes clear that childcare is going to clash with music tour plans, he simply takes his four children along for the ride – creating the perfect foundation for dramatic conflicts that lead to comically bizarre situations. Often, the only things keeping the show on the road are David’s humor and his feel for the astonishing similarities between the needs of artists and children. Host: Rainer Schmidt
