Every day, we read and hear about irregular migration and the need to tackle this problem. But who are these people who wash ashore on Lampedusa, who swim across a river to enter into Greece, who nearly suffocate in the back of the container truck, or who hide away in the corners of an inner-city square in Cologne? And what do we know about the war in Sudan, the greatest humanitarian catastrophe right now, which has sent 12 million people fleeing? Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin, who managed to escape his homeland in 2012 after being arrested, paints such a vivid picture of these refugees that we can hear their heartbeats, feel their exhaustion and smell their cold sweat. His novel Der Rabe, der mich liebte [“The Raven Who Loved Me”] tells the story of two Sudanese men in the chaos of the refugee encampment known as the “Calais Jungle”. Sakin is one of Sudan’s best-known authors, although his books have long been banned there – and now cannot be published due to the war.
