The two lives of Hans Rosenthal – with Gert Rosenthal, Birgit Hofmann, Florian Lukas and Adriana Altaras

“Some of the people who cheer for me today might have turned me in 30 years ago”, said Hans Rosenthal, who became famous in the 1970s as quizmaster on the legendary German TV game show “Dalli Dalli”. With his likeable personality, he won the hearts of his viewers – in a society where as a young man he had to fight to survive under the Nazi regime. As a Jew, he was persecuted by the Nazis and survived by hiding in a garden shed for two years. It was not until 1980 that he told his incredible life story in the book Zwei Leben in Deutschland [“Two Lives In Germany”]. When he won a television award shortly before his death, he said in his acceptance speech: “Today I once again feel like I am one of you and that makes me happy.” In honor of the 100th anniversary of their father’s birth, Birgit Hofmann and Gert Rosenthal speak with Adriana Altaras about his eventful life.
