Ursula K. Le Guin and Corinna Harfouch dig deep into their carrier bags of fiction
Ursula K. Le Guin was a pioneer of science fiction and fantasy literature and her books still shape popular culture today. The blockbuster “Avatar” is based on her novel, “The Word for World is Forest”, and elements of “Game of Thrones” are inspired by her works. Who knows whether Harry Potter and Hogwarts would ever have existed without the school of wizardry in Le Guin’s “Earthsea” novels? Yet, during her lifetime, Le Guin still struggled to be recognized as a serious author. She said about her writing that it was “an attempt to describe what happens [...] how humans relate to everything else that is in this huge bag” – which led her to develop the “Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction”. Her own bag was always full to the brim: She wrote 23 novels, 12 volumes of short stories, 11 volumes of poetry, 13 children’s books and five collections of essays. Corinna Harfouch will read from Le Guin’s impressive writing while Traudl Bünger traces her life and work.
