What traces does colonial violence leave behind? With Gabriela Wiener and Jasmin Tabatabai
Peruvian author and journalist Gabriela Wiener is one of the most exciting literary voices in Latin America. Her book Undiscovered was nominated for the 2024 International Booker Prize and is now finally being published in German translation. In this very personal text, she traces the story of her great-great grandfather, the Franco-Austrian colonial explorer Charles Wiener. During his time in Peru, he plundered around 4,000 pre-Hispanic ceramic portrait sculptures known as “huacos”, which are on display in European museums to this day. Around 150 years later, Gabriela Wiener stands in a museum staring at these huacos, recognizing herself in their faces, and begins a literary exploration of her own indigenous identity, western centralism, European colonialism and racism. In doing so, she becomes a chronicler of Peru, her family’s history and, not least, herself. German Text: Jasmin Tabatabai; Host: Hernán D. Caro
